Cornerstone Award 2016 Announced

2016 Cornerstone Award Winner Announced

Alabama Construction News is pleased to announce, for the first time in the Cornerstone Award history, two recipients of the 2016 Cornerstone Award: Gerald Acker of Acker Electric and Jim Early of Early Services.

The Cornerstone Award is presented annually to someone who has made an exemplary lifelong commitment to Alabama construction and has brought favorable recognition to the industry as a result of his personal integrity, business ethics and community involvement.

This year’s choices parallel with the political climate of our state and nation, commented ABC of Alabama President Jay Reed. “As our office experiences an unprecedented amount of members concerned about the legislative climate at both a state and federal level, this year’s recipients were only fitting,” he said. “Mr. Acker and Mr. Early both stand for what is right for our country, for our industry and for our workers. From the inception of ABC of Alabama, these companies have stood by our association when dealing with labor concerns, workforce development and defending the free enterprise system, which was the basis of ABC. This year, there was simply no way to choose between Mr. Acker and Mr. Early. Without fail, both of these gentlemen and their companies have stood ready and been there for not only ABC of Alabama, but also for me personally any time I called. I can certainly say without a doubt that ABC of Alabama is better and more well thought of because these two individuals and their companies are associated with us.”

ABC of Alabama’s 2016 Chairman of the Board Randall Curtis echoed Reed’s comments and added, “The entire time I have been engaged in the association, these two names consistently came up in board meetings,” he said. When we truly need the pulse of the industry and to hear from what we call our ‘average member,’ these two gentlemen were always first on our to-call list. This eagerness to do what is right while not compromising their beliefs is so humbling. I am excited that these two individuals are being recognized the first time Alabama Construction News has two Cornerstone recipients. I couldn’t agree more with Jay. It is only fitting with the political climate we are experiencing that we tell these two outstanding gentlemen’s story.”

Gerald Acker, Acker Electric

Since Acker founded Acker Electric Company in 1958, he not only began to grow his business into a major electrical contractor company but also his commitment to the industry and the merit shop philosophy. Acker’s guiding principles of integrity always, helping others before yourself and never comprising has led to his longstanding dedicating to fighting for the free enterprise system.

Jim Early, Early Services

Hard work, honesty, pride of hard work and integrity are words that not only define Early Services, but also its founder, Jim Early. Time and again, Early has shown his passion and dedication to the merit shop philosophy as he has strived to further the industry and instill his core beliefs into the generation of employees at Early Services.

Both award winners will be recognized at ABC of Alabama’s 27th Annual Excellence in Construction Awards Banquet on November 3 at the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel.
